Wipers come in various designs including flat blades and sizes from 13 inches to around 28 inches. Which blade you need depends on your car.

Wipers are manufactured by companies including Bosch, Michelin, Champion, Trico and Valeo and are sold by local garages, via eBay, by car parts specialists, online stores, large retailers such as Halfords and by windscreen repair and replacement companies such as Autoglass®.

Flat blades, Super Twin, Aerotwin, Super Plus - confusing isn't it?

Not sure which wipers you need? Have a look in your car's owner's manual or get out a tape measure and measure your windscreen wipers. Measure them both because many cars have one wiper blade longer than the other.

In September 2008, AutoExpress did a wiper test and the Bosch Super Plus and Bosch Aerotwin took the top two spots.

How much do wiper blades cost?

Much depends on quality; Tesco will sell you a pair of wipers for not much money or you can spend a little more and get wipers from a dedicated automotive supplier such as Bosch.

Expect to pay from around £18 to over £50 a pair depending on the length of the blades and whether you opt for traditional or the new flat blade technology.

Have your new wipers fitted

Where you buy them is up to you but if you are at all unsure what size you need or how to fit your new wipers then your best bet is to ask an expert and have them fit new ones for you.

  • Halfords will sell you new blades and fit them for £1.99 (for one blade) or £2.99 (for a pair). You may need to pre-book (contact your local Halfords store).
  • Autoglass® sells Bosch windscreen wiper blades and offers free fitting

You can't buy wiper blades online from Autoglass® but they sell top-quality Bosch wiper blades at all their one hundred or so branches around the UK and will give your car a free windscreen safety check at the same time. Find a branch.

Got a new windscreen? Buy new blades

If you've just had a brand new screen fitted do the sensible thing and get new wiper blades at the same time rather than risk damaging your new screen with the old blades. In the immortal words of Del Boy - you know it makes sense!

Don't forget your rear windscreen

Just because it is behind you, don't overlook your rear window either. Due to aerodynamics, the back of most cars collects a lot of road muck and traffic film. So when you check your front wipers make sure to check the rear wiper blade at the same time.
