Windscreen wiper blades are something you only think about when the view from the drivers' seat starts to look a little smeary or when the MOT tester fails your car for having ineffective wipers.

In fact, a recent article on wiper systems on Just-Auto.com claims "the average wiper blade wipes the windscreen over one million times in a year, and travels 800 miles in this time. Despite such wear and tear, motorists seldom replace their blades as often as they should".

Wipers are an important part of your car as they help you to see where you are going. So how do you know if anything is wrong with your car's blades or tell when they need renewing?

You should check the condition of your wipers regularly and the experts say that you should fit new blades every 6 months on average. Sometimes however, you'll be able to tell when your they need renewing by the sounds they make or by the unswept areas they leave.

Buying new wiper blades

How do you know what type and size of blades to buy? First step is to check your car's owner's manual or measure both windscreen wipers.

Top tip - many cars have two different-sized windscreen wipers; the driver's side blade is usually the longest.

The alternative is simply to take your car to a specialist such as Autoglass® who not only sell wiper blades but will fit them for free at their branches saving you the hassle.

Have a look at the page on buying wipers and if you want to try fitting new blades yourself see the information on our wiper FAQ page.

If you are not sure whether you need new ones or are unsure about fitting them simply print the voucher above.

And don't forget your rear window wiper

Just because it's behind you don't overlook the need to check your rear wiper. The back of your car acts as a magnet for traffic film and road muck and this can have a detrimental effect on the rubber of the blade.

Wipers and the MOT test

The MOT test examines the condition, security and effectiveness of the blades and their contact with the screen. When did you last check that your wipers were in good condition?

Make sure your screen-wash tank is topped up too before you take your car to the MOT test centre!
